Guiding Children's Behavior
Guidance Philosophy
I believe in guidance, rather than punishment. Guidance is a positive way to help a child develop self-control and confidence to meet their needs in a socially acceptable way. This is an on-going process, not a single act. I am there to teach and guide each child to learn the skills to manage their own behavior. Each child is unique and is treated differently. One method of guiding and disciplining may work for one child, but not for another.
I believe that children should be treated with respect. Children need to perceive themselves as worthwhile, capable and significant, and therefore their experiences should be positive and healthy. I feel it is important that I communicate acceptance and allow a child to develop a sense of belonging.
Children must be allowed to make mistakes. This is all part of the learning process. I will acknowledge the children's feelings and frustrations and to offer calm positive guidance when situations arise. Children learn through imitation; it is important for caregivers to be positive role models. We must model manners and acceptance. It is important to encourage children, this helps to develop their self-esteem and self-confidence.
As a caregiver it is necessary for me to understand and to apply child development knowledge. This knowledge will provide me with accurate information about appropriate and realistic expectations of what children are capable of doing. Through positive guidance and caring I will be able to enhance their self-esteem so that they can develop socially, physically, emotionally, cognitively and creatively.
I developed this philosophy through the knowledge that I have gained through my work experience, life experience, professional workshops and the classes I have taken to fulfill my Preschool Credential.

Guidance Policy
Mission: To ensure that children receive positive guidance and encouragement.
Children will be respected for who they are. Positive guidance is to be provided at all times while the children are receiving care in this environment.
Positive guidance will be given through using positive teaching techniques and strategies, which are a important part of the foundation of this environment and the beliefs that are held.
Positive guidance, values and behaviors will be modeled by all staff.
Respecting and valuing each child for who they are.
Respecting and valuing the families and of the children.
Giving each child my time, stopping to listen to the children.
Learning and care to he held as important aspects of the day.
If a child needs redirection because of their behavior, this will be done in an appropriate way.
Children will NOT be yelled at or told 'no' continually throughout the day, rather they will be redirected with positive encouragement.
The children will be nurtured and supported in their social development.
1.Our environment is developmentally appropriate maintained and safely arranged.; toys and materials are changed frequently.
2. Enough toys are available for all children; toys and materials are changed frequently.
3. We offer both active and quiet activities.
4. We encourage children to use words instead of physical actions to express feelings and solve problems.
5. We treat children with the same respect.
6.We have developmentally appropriate expectations for children's behavior and we communicate our expectations for behavior to the children.
7. We tell children in advance about their schedule for the day.
8. Classroom rules, routines and responsibilities are visually clear and verbal explained to the children.
9. We model appropriate behaviors such as manners, compromise, cooperation, respect, kindness & compassion.
10. We respect each child and the values and cultures of them and their families.
We use praise, kind words, smiles, hugs, applause, and other positive reinforcements to consistently used to encourage desired behavior. Our guidance procedure will provide a nurturing environment to encourage self-control, to teach self-respect, respect for others and respect for property.
If further guidance is necessary, we will conference with the family to build a guidance plan together. Setting forth goals, actions teachers will take and actions parents will take.
